Biosphere reserves balance biodiversity conservation with sustainable human living under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme, launched in 1971. Each reserve uses a three-tier zoning model: a legally protected Core Area kept as a National Park or Sanctuary, a managed Buffer Zone for research, and an outer Transition Zone where local communities live and farm. India has eighteen designated biosphere reserves, spanning unique biomes from Himalayan heights at Nanda Devi to the coastal mangroves of the Sundarbans.
For UPSC and State PSC exams, candidates must track which Indian reserves belong to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Twelve of India's eighteen reserves hold this international status, with Panna added in 2020. A standard prelims trap tests geographical sizes: Gujarat's Rann of Kutch is the largest reserve by area, while Assam's Dibru-Saikhowa is the smallest. Also remember that Nilgiri was India's first reserve, created in 1986 across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.
