India records 7.8% real GDP expansion in Q1 of 2026-27
India's real GDP grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of financial year 2026-27. Real Gross Value Added increased by 8.2%, supported by manufacturing and services. Investment rose by 11.9%, household consumption by 7.1% and exports by 12.0%. The government described the quarter as a strong start to the financial year amid continuing global economic uncertainty. The data represented the highest Q1 real GDP growth during the four-year period from 2023-24 to 2026-27.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reviewed implementation of the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana on 1 September. The programme covers 100 identified districts and uses convergence of multiple government interventions to improve agricultural outcomes. The average district score on the scheme's monitoring framework rose from 22.54 in April to 38.85 in July 2026. The review examined District Action Plans, field monitoring, financial progress, capacity building and beneficiary-level outcome tracking. The government stressed measurable improvements in farmer welfare rather than only expenditure-based monitoring.

Government pushes watershed projects as a route to drought resilience

DGFT automates issuance of Free Sale and Commerce Certificates for eligible exporters
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade enabled automated issuance of Free Sale and Commerce Certificates on its portal on 1 September. The certificates are issued under the Foreign Trade Policy for eligible products not covered by the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Qualifying applications can now bypass routine manual scrutiny and be processed automatically under defined parameters. Applications requiring verification can still be referred to regional authorities and selected cases may undergo risk-based review. The reform is intended to reduce processing time and compliance costs while making export documentation more predictable.

Adra-Joychandipahar bypass receives Rs 272 crore approval to improve freight movement
Indian Railways approved an 11-km bypass line between Adra and Joychandipahar in South Eastern Railway at a cost of Rs 272 crore. The project will provide path segregation and a bi-directional connection to an upcoming third line. It is designed to ease bottlenecks and reduce delays caused by existing surface crossings. The line is expected to support additional industrial and freight traffic in the region. The project has particular significance for bulk movement associated with the steel and coal sectors.
Kavach 4.0 receives approval for the remaining 712 route-km of Moradabad Division
Indian Railways approved Rs 170 crore for deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 over the remaining 712 route kilometres of Moradabad Division in Northern Railway. Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system. It is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger, control train speed and automatically apply brakes when necessary. The approval strengthens the safety layer available for train operations in the identified sections. It is a deployment approval and should not be interpreted as completion of installation over all 712 route kilometres.
Bidding intensifies for Odisha's 160-km Rameshwar-Paradeep coastal highway
NHAI reported strong bidder participation for the 160-km access-controlled greenfield coastal highway between Rameshwar and Paradeep in Odisha. The project is divided into two packages, covering Rameshwar-Konark and Konark-Paradeep. The first package received ten bids while the second attracted seven bids. The highway was earlier approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs at a combined capital cost of about Rs 8,300.79 crore. The project is intended to strengthen coastal connectivity and freight movement in Odisha.

Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb assumes IAF's top maintenance appointment
Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb assumed charge as Air Officer-in-Charge Maintenance of the Indian Air Force on 1 September 2026. He was commissioned into the Aeronautical Engineering branch of the IAF in 1988. His career included work on aircraft such as the IL-76, AWACS and Boeing 737-200 and participation in the induction of the IL-78 flight-refuelling capability. He previously served in senior aircraft and systems maintenance appointments at Air Headquarters. He succeeds Air Marshal Sanjiv Ghuratia, who superannuated on 31 August 2026.
Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma becomes first non-medical woman officer at two-star level
Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma became the first woman officer from the non-medical stream in the Indian Defence Forces to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal or equivalent. She assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on 1 September 2026. She was commissioned into the IAF Education Branch in 1994. Her career has included assignments across training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters. She was also the first woman officer from the tri-services to command a Sainik School, serving as its principal at Kapurthala.

Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja takes over as 47th DGAFMS
Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja assumed charge as the 47th Director General Armed Forces Medical Services on 1 September 2026. The DGAFMS oversees comprehensive medical support for India's Defence Forces. His portfolio includes operational medical preparedness, modernisation, digital health, medical research and development of military healthcare capabilities. Air Marshal Thareja was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in 1986 and is a trained physician and gastroenterologist. He is an alumnus of Armed Forces Medical College and completed advanced medical training at AIIMS, New Delhi.

Air Marshal Vivek Hande assumes charge as DGMS (Air)
Air Marshal Vivek Hande took over as Director General Medical Services (Air) on 1 September 2026. He joined the Indian Air Force on permanent secondment after a career spanning multiple branches of the Defence Forces. He is an alumnus of Armed Forces Medical College, Tata Memorial Hospital and the National Defence College. His previous appointments included senior medical and organisational responsibilities within the Armed Forces Medical Services. The appointment is notable for his service experience across all three Defence Services.
India and Germany deepen cooperation on wetlands and environmental resilience
India and Germany held the fourth Indo-German Environment Forum in New Delhi on 1 September 2026. The discussions focused on climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, pollution control and sustainable resource use. India and Germany signed a Joint Declaration of Intent concerning the conservation and wise use of wetlands of international importance. CAQM reports fresh enforcement action across the National Capital Region
The Commission for Air Quality Management reviewed enforcement activity in the NCR at its 138th Enforcement Task Force meeting. The review covered inspections conducted between 8 and 23 August, including construction sites, industries and diesel-generator installations. A total of 121 inspections were reported during the period. Proposed enforcement actions included closure of projects or industries, sealing of diesel generators and environmental compensation in selected cases. The development illustrates the role of CAQM in implementing air-pollution control measures across the NCR.

Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar 5.0 launches with a renewed ocean-conservation focus
The Ministry of Earth Sciences launched the fifth edition of Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar on 1 September 2026. The campaign seeks to involve citizens, students, coastal communities and volunteer organisations in ocean and beach conservation. The 2026 edition is scheduled for nationwide activities from 12 to 19 September. Planned activities include beach clean-up drives, ocean pledges, youth programmes and public rallies. The Digital India BHASHINI Division organised an international BHASHINI SANGAM workshop in Kathmandu on 1 September 2026. Discussions focused on multilingual and voice-first artificial intelligence for access to digital services in preferred languages. BHASHINI is India's national platform for AI-powered multilingual digital inclusion and supports Indian and international languages. The workshop represented an effort to extend language technology and digital public infrastructure cooperation beyond India.

Government highlights Rs 1 lakh crore RDI Fund as a tool for technology-led growth
Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh called for wider awareness of the Rs 1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Fund on 1 September 2026. CCI clears TPG-linked acquisition of Aseem Infrastructure Finance
The Competition Commission of India approved the acquisition of Aseem Infrastructure Finance Limited by TPG Nicobar SG Pte. Ltd. on 1 September 2026. The combination includes acquisition of the entire share capital of Aseem by Nicobar followed by a proposed 5% acquisition by ICICI Bank. The transaction also includes divestment of Aseem's 30.83% holding in NIIF Infrastructure Finance Limited to NIIF II. A merger of Climate Finance India Private Limited into Aseem is also proposed as part of the transaction structure. The case is relevant to understanding CCI merger control and competition regulation in India's financial sector.
CCI approves Kids Clinic's acquisition of Apollo healthcare entities
The Competition Commission of India approved the acquisition of up to 100% equity in Apollo Fertility Centre and Apollo Specialty Hospitals by Kids Clinic India on 1 September 2026. The proposed combination also provides for issuance of equity shares and optionally convertible debentures in Kids Clinic India to Apollo Health and Lifestyle as part consideration. Apollo Fertility Centre operates in assisted reproductive and fertility services, including IVF-related treatments. The transaction therefore combines competition regulation with consolidation in the specialised healthcare sector. The approval is an example of CCI oversight of significant corporate combinations.
